버티컬 모달(vertical modal) 작곡 기법

□ 국문초록

본 논문은 밀러(Ron Miller)의 모달 화성(modal harmony)과 모달 재즈(modal jazz)의 작곡 기법인 버티컬 모달(vertical modal) 스타일의 악곡에 쓰인 모달 코드(modal chord)의 진행 양상과 그 구간이 주는 감정에 대한 연구이다. 버티컬 모달은 곡 전체가 조성이나 기능적인 관련이 없는 모드(mode)로 계속 변화하는 난해한 구조로 되어있어 듣는 이나 작곡가들에게 상당한 궁금증을 유발하지만, 구체적인 이론적 제시가 없고 특정 재즈 뮤지션과 밀러의 이론에 영향을 받은 뮤지션들에게서만 볼 수 있는 독특한 특징을 갖고 있다.

본 연구를 통해 밀러가 제시한 모달 하모니의 이론을 활용하여 기존 재즈 화성학에서 분석할 수 없는 버티컬 모달 스타일의 모멘텀과 그 하모니의 특성 및 밀러가 제시한 감정의 윤곽이 실제 곡에서 느낄 수 있는 분위기와 얼마나 조화를 이루는지 검증할 수 있었다.

☐ Abstract

A Study on Ron Miller’s Vertical Modal Compositional Techniques

This paper examines Ron Miller’s modal harmony. It focuses on the modal chords used in vertical modal style music, which is a composition technique of modal jazz composition, and the emotion expressed therein. Vertical modal has a convoluted structure that continuously makes changes to modes which are irrelevant to tonality or functionality. This has drawn curiosity from listeners and composers. However, there are no specific theoretical presentations in vertical modal. It is found only in the works of certain jazz musicians and some musicians influenced by Miller's theory. This paper uses Miller's modal harmony theory to identify the vertical modal style momentum which could not be analyzed through present functional jazz harmony and its characteristics. It also verifies the harmony of the emotional flow when using Miller's techniques and the mood that comes from the actual music.
